A structured approach to solving an issue

How often have you tried to resolve an issue which appears simple but cannot be fixed?

Often the issue you’re trying to resolve is just a symptom of a more deep rooted problem.  The 5i’s enables you to find the true issue that needs resolving with a framework to address and deliver the necessary change.

The 5i’s - Issue, Information, Insight, Implications, Implementation

Don’t just treat the leaves, get to the root.

A framework to help your thinking and bring others on board.

I ssue

Articulate, preferably in one simple sentence, what the issue is that needs addressing.

I nformation

List all the key “Facts” associated with the issue, actively avoid using any emotions or hearsay as fact.

I nsight

This is where you or the group test the stated initial issue by asking “Why”.

Continue asking why for every answer until fully exhausted. This process enables you to ensure that the “real” issue is identified as an insight, to be address as the root cause rather than what might be simply a symptom. Use the facts under Information to ensure the answers to each why is valid.

I mplications

Having obtained the insight, list out what the likely implications are compared to the original stated issue.

I mplementation

This exercise is only of value if change or improvements can be made. Hence a plan should be made to address the newly discovered insight taking into account the implications and facts above.

The 5i’s - Issue, Information, Insight, Implications, Implementation

A working example using the 5i’s

Here’s a working example of a 5i's resolving the issue of how to make a simple cheap technology accessible to the elderly and disabled.

I ssue

Many useful technologies have bi-passed elderly people, as it's perceived as too complicated and/or expensive.  The sad fact is that most of our OAPs or disabled would greatly benefit from the simple application of todays technology, helping them : -

  • to be better informed, less overwhelmed
  • live in a safer environment , less vulnerable
  • be more socially interactive , less lonely

I nformation

Smart Home technologies such as Amazon Echo, Ring doorbells, smart switches + light bulbs, all managed through a common medium such as Alexa can provide an easy and cheap introduction. This smart technology can deliver instant benefits through ease of set-up and use, without the need to be tech savvy.

Additionally, smart phones and tablets provide new users with an easy way to employ, manage and navigate today’s technological minefield.

I nsight

These benefits can and should be enjoyed by our elderly and/or disabled loved ones, to encourage their independence and enhance their lives.

I mplications

The benefits need to be communicated to the target audience with a clear indication of what is possible, how this effective technology can be implemented and at what cost.

I mplementation

Identify where this knowledge can best be shared in order to implement solutions targeted to individual needs.

  • Age UK
  • Libraries
  • Local volunteer groups
  • etc.

Arrange an on-site meeting/presentation and demonstration to discuss potential needs and opportunities, with detailed costs of implementing potential solutions.  If and when agreed, a follow up plan for installation with training and instructions could be provided (ongoing support and help can also be arranged via a whatsapp group).
